A deep rumble filled the air. Illume heard the Boat Man call out in fear. Illume turned to see a darkness on the horizon that grew.

“What is that?” John asked.

Fire & Ash

Walking toward the mast, Illume slashed the rope, which freed Corazon and the Boat Man. Corazon whimpered as he fell to the ground, while Illume pointed at the ever-growing tidal wave on the horizon.

“Corazon, get us away from that,” Illume commanded.

Corazon was still in a daze and groaned as he shook his head. Illume leaned down and pulled the dazed man to his feet. He turned the “pirate” around and pointed him toward the wall of water as it rapidly approached.

“That! Right there!” Illume persisted. “Get us out of its range.”

“There is nothing he can do,” the Boat Man informed, his tone resolute. “Even if you had not nearly killed him with that punch, that wave is magic. It is a curse placed on us by the sirens. None who have been cursed have ever lived to speak about it.”

Illume’s brow arched at the Boat Man’s comment. He glanced around and noticed a large rope ladder rigging that went to the crow’s nest.

“Then how do people know about it?” Illume asked.

“There have been witnesses,” the Boat Man replied.

“Everyone, focus all your magic on that wave,” Illume commanded.

“Brother, we don’t have enough to slow that thing down, let alone stop it,” John opined as he approached the railing.

“Just do it,” Illume ordered.

With that, Illume climbed the rope ladder as light shone from both the Boat Man and John. The wind picked up as the wave grew closer. Illume made it to the crow’s nest in a matter of moments but his stamina took a hit from the climb.

As Illume faced the wave, he could see flares of magic as they danced over the hundred-foot swell. It was only a few miles away, but it closed in fast. Illume summoned his mana with all his might as he brought to life his frost magic.

As he threw his hands out in front of him, a massive beam of blue frosted light shot from his hands. He had to admit he felt a little like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s frost gun, but it was intoxicating. Illume separated his hands as the center of the wave began to solidify.

With both hands slowly separated from one another, Illume was able to continue to freeze the impending wave. His mana didn’t drop due to his proximity to the crystal shallows, but the cost of unleashing a torrent of frost cold enough to rival Pluto took its toll.

A sharp pain struck Illume’s mind. He smelt the blood before he felt it drip from his nose. He gritted his teeth as his vision blurred and his heart pounded. His knees weakened, but the wave wasn’t frozen yet and it was now less than a half mile away.

Illume felt a wave of cold wash over him, as his vision went white for a few seconds. The cold seemed to be absorbed into his very core.
